Fire Escape Plan Installation Guidelines

Fire Escape Plan Installation Guidelines

At FireEscapePlans.com, we design evacuation plans for clients worldwide. While local fire safety regulations may vary, most international standards follow similar principles for installation height, placement, and visibility to ensure diagrams are effective during emergencies.

Recommended Installation Height

Evacuation plans should be installed at a height that allows them to be easily viewed during normal movement.

Recommended range: 1200mm – 1600mm from finished floor level (FFL)

This ensures diagrams are clearly visible to occupants, staff, and visitors at all times.

Recommended Locations / Positions

fire evacuation plan should be placed in key circulation and high-visibility areas to maximize awareness and usability:

  • Near building entrances and exits – for quick orientation when entering or leaving

  • Inside corridors and hallways – high-traffic zones for easy route understanding

  • Near staircases / fire stairs – for safe vertical evacuation

  • On or near fire doors, smoke doors, or fire-rated walls – without compromising fire protection integrity

  • Inside occupant rooms, commonly in:

    • Hotel rooms, apartments

    • Hospital rooms

    • Classrooms, offices

    • Childcare / preschool facilities
(Typically mounted on the back of entry/exit doors in these spaces)

Visibility Requirements

To be effective, evacuation diagrams must be:

  • Conspicuously located – easy to see during an emergency

  • Positioned at eye level and unobstructed

  • Correctly oriented, with the “You Are Here” (YAH) marker aligned to the actual mounting location and wall direction
