Installation of Fire Escape Plans

Fire Escape Plan Installation Guidelines (International Standards)

At FireEscapePlans.com and evacuationdiagram.com, we design evacuation diagrams for clients across many countries.
While local laws may vary from region to region, most international safety standards follow similar requirements for installation height, placement, and visibility.

Below are globally accepted best practices for installing evacuation diagrams in any facility:

Recommended Installation Height

Fire Escape plans  should be installed at a height that makes them easy to view during normal movement inside a building.

Recommended height:
1200mm to 1600mm from the finished floor level (FFL)
This range ensures diagrams are clearly visible to occupants, staff, and visitors.

Recommended Locations / Positions

Fire Escape Plans are typically installed in key circulation and high-visibility areas, such as:

✔ Near building entrances and exits

To ensure people can easily view the escape route upon entering or before exiting.

✔ Inside common corridors and hallways

Ideal for high-traffic zones where occupants can quickly understand exit directions.

✔ Near staircases or fire stairs

Ensures guidance during vertical evacuation.

✔ On or near fire doors, smoke doors, or fire-rated walls

(Installed without causing damage to fire-rating — avoid drilling or screws where prohibited.)

✔ Inside occupant rooms

Common in facilities such as:

  • Hotel rooms

  • Apartments

  • Hospital rooms

  • Classrooms

  • Offices

  • Childcare/preschool facilities

In such spaces, the diagram is usually placed on the back of the entry/exit door.

Visibility Requirements

To be effective, fire escape plans must be:

  • Installed in a conspicuous location, easy to see during an emergency

  • Positioned at eye level, without obstruction

  • Installed with the correct orientation, ensuring the “You Are Here” (YAH) marker aligns accurately with the actual mounting location and wall direction
